P3O® Training

Introduction

During this course, delegates will learn how to implement, develop and manage a support structure for the delivery of change through organisations and offices. Delegates can do all this through P3O.

Project, Programme & Portfolio Office (P3O) is a business framework designed to implement and support a structure for the deliverance of change within an organisation. It has been made by Axelos and is designed to link with other Axelos frameworks such as PRINCE2, MSP and M_o_R easily. It aligns areas of interest with the same objectives, ensuring senior management personnel can make informed decisions and comprehend how different business components can fit in with business strategies.

Course Structure & Content

P3O® Foundation & Practitioner is an intensive five day course where candidates will become familiar with the concepts involved in the P3O manual. For the first three days, candidates will concentrated on learning the key features of P3O and how to pass the Foundation exam. The rest of the days focus on the Practitioner exam.

The Foundation exam is a multiple choice test with fifty questions. The pass mark is 30 out of 50. Upon completing this exam, candidates are recognised as being able to act as an important member in portfolio management teams which utilise P3O methods in portfolio environments.

The Practitioner exam is a seventy question ‘objective testing’ exam with a pass mark of at least 35. Delegates are welcome to bring their manuals into the exam with them. Completing this exam shows that candidates are capable of applying P3O to portfolios and run and manage the framework.

Case Study

BT Design, a section of British Telecom, used P3O to help support and improve how they deliver programmes.

With the expansion of BT into new markets in 2008, they decided to collect their systems and programmes together in order to extract the maximum benefits from all of them. They used a programme called Milestone to explore this.

Using Milestone, BT realised that different programmes were being delivered using different methodologies and that a consistent approach needed to be implemented. They chose P3O as it had the best reputation as a best practice framework, and knew it would be consistent and dependable.

To start P3O implementation, BT focused on senior management. To get them on their side, the senior management were shown how P3O could benefit their programmes and how management and bringing in value could be made easier. Once senior management were on board, the rest of the employees were also.

BT Design then created a best practice team who went to work on the most difficult programmes in the business. Using P3O, this team were able to roll out best practice processes across the organisation, making things consistent and effective throughout.

P3O was then used to balance and manage BT Design’s portfolio. This provided the staff with a clear view of their organisational processes, allowing decision makers to be better informed on whether programmes were viable and this ensured every programme leader used the best standards of practice.
