Leicester, a city in the East Midlands of England. Leicester has become a large economic centre, due to main railway and canal networks being routed through the area. Road links close to the M1 motorway, railway lines and bus routes allow this area to be an easily commutable area.
The city of Leicester lies on the River Soar and is located at the edge of the National Forest. Leicester has recently become famous for being home to the football team Leicester FC who defied the odds of 5000-1 and won the Premier League trophy. Currently the city has a population of around 330,000 with these figures expected to rise in the upcoming years.
Due to its strategic location Leicester is located near several airports such as Heathrow Airport, Birmingham Airport, Gatwick Airport, Stansted Airport, London Luton Airport, and East Midlands Airport. Leicester has several bus routes which run through the city and provide quick access to key areas for a relatively low price. The rail network in Leicester is expanding and has recently introduced Eurostar international services which now link Leicester Lille, Brussels and Paris.
Leicester has a vibrant shopping scene and boasts many boutiques, markets, specialist stores and a wide variety of high street names. Highcross is a large shopping centre which is full of high street brands like Apple, Burton, Debenhams, The Disney Store and more. Inside this shopping centre visitors can also enjoy the cinema and the many eateries that are available to choose from.
Haymarket Shopping Centre is the oldest shopping mall in Great Britain and is full of major stores such as H & M, Pandora, Peacocks, Primark and TK & Max. If none of the shopping centres are for you then Leicester Market is a great choice with over 270 stalls. Leicester Market is around 800 years old and has stalls which sell a wide variety of goods like fruit and vegetables, flowers, clothes, jewellery and more.
There are various popular attractions and landmarks in Leicester such as the National Space Centre which is one of the UK’s leading attractions which is devoted to space science and astronomy. You can see various exhibits and galleries that cover space flight, astronomy and cosmology.
Leicester has two universities which are the University of Leicester and De Montfort University, the University of Leicester has a main campus which is south of the city centre and currently has around 18,000 students. De Montfort University ranked 53rd in the Times University rankings for 2016 and has just under 20,000 students.
