Manchester is a major city in Greater Manchester, England and is currently the 7th biggest city in England. The city is known worldwide for its sporting culture and was also the world’s first industrial city. In 2013 Manchester was voted as the best city in the UK to live in by the 2013 Global Liveability Survey.
Public transport in Manchester consists of bus services which operate on three circular routes and cover all of the major city centre areas. Manchester is served by two main rail stations which are Manchester Victoria and Manchester Piccadilly, these travel to key points in the city and provide quick access to shopping centres and sporting areas.
There are wide variety of festivals and events held in Manchester such as the Manchester International Festival which takes place every year and features various artists whilst maintaining a focus on original new work.
Manchester is full of highly rated tourist attractions such as the Manchester Cathedral which dates back to 1422 and has beautifully constructed interior and exterior which has to be seen. The People’s History Museum is the UK’s national centre for collecting, conserving and interpreting material which is related to the history of working people in Britain. Another popular attraction is the Old Trafford Museum and Stadium Tour where visitors can tour Old Trafford and gain a sneak peek into the player’s dressing room.
Culture is strong in Manchester and several famous musicians have come from the city such as The Smiths, Oasis, Simply Red, Take That and many more. You can visit several art galleries and museums such as The Museum of Science and Industry, The Museum of Transport, Manchester Art Gallery and Whitworth Art Gallery.
Manchester has three universities which are The University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University and Royal Northern College of Music. The University of Manchester was formed in 2004 by the merging of the University Of Manchester Institute Of Science and Technology and the Victoria University of Manchester. Today this university is ranked 33rd in the world by QS World University Rankings and has over 38,000 students.
Another university is the Manchester Metropolitan University which gained its university status in 1992 and has over 31,000 students. The Royal Northern College of Music is a centre of music education but is also used as a performance venue for concerts and musical events.
