The Open Group - More About It

During the early 1990’s UNIX system vendors realized that the UNIX wars were causing a lot of harm to the UNIX industry. The UNIX industry was as such left to face competition that was growing day by day. In 1993, the COSE initiative was the first that aimed at unifying the Open Software Foundation (OSF) and X/Open in 1996. In 1994, OSF had merged with UNIX International.

In Jan 1997, The Open Group became the responsible authority for managing the affairs of the X Windows System. X Windows was managed by X.Org in 1999 which in turn was managed by services provided by The Open Group. The X.Org members were responsible for many releases of the X Windows System including X11R6.8 while the management services were provided by The Open Group. In 2004, X.Org and The Open Group under the banner of the new X.Org Foundation who took over the stewardship of the X Window System.

Certification

The Open Group's best-known services are their certification programs that include certification for products and best practices such as POSIX, North American State Lotteries Association (NASPL), and UNIX.

The Open Group provides certifications for IT professionals as well. There are two more certifications namely the Open Group Certified Architect (Open CA) program and the Open Group Certified IT Specialist (Open CITS) that are managed by the Open Group. Besides these, The Open Group certifies professionals with the  Open FAIR and IT4IT Certifications.
